At a careers fair we were once asked by a female student “Am I Allowed?” when we asked her whether she’d thought about learning a trade! And of course the answer is YES!! Not least because the UK Construction Industry has a major skills shortage, but it’s hardly surprising when only around 2% of the workforce are females in frontline trades. Shocking!
‘Girls Allowed’ is a project funded by Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership and will help females aged 16-23 find out more about the industry, find out about female role models who have made good careers for themselves in construction, explore some of the myths they may believe about the industry and have a go in the workshop. We know there are only about 20% of the Apprentices needed in the industry each year and we know that we have a number of Apprenticeship opportunities that are unfilled.
We’re clearing out the training centre for the day so those who attend will have it all to themselves, so don’t be shy, come and have a go! We need everyone to arrive by 0930 for a briefing, ready to start at 10am with the session ending at 1pm.
